An Evolution of Defining Success

by Jodi Herman-Dority

Life can only be understood backwards.

For a female born in the 1960’s, success was defined for me as marrying the right man and living happily ever after.

By the 1970’s I had expanded that to include societal and sexual freedoms.

By the 80’s  affording myself excess.

By the 90’s personal satisfaction.

By the year 2000 the 1960’s definition of female success had been successfully debunked. Sex had been replaced with physical fitness and a good dog had easily won out over the right man.

By 2010 my visions of success began to dally with existential elements:

  • A communion with the cosmos
  • Respect for a living planet
  • Acceptance

I did not have all the answers.

And now in the decade of the 20’s I have narrowed it down to contentment. Having my basic needs met, living in harmony with myself, my past, and that with which I interact.

And if I’m really lucky, in the 2030’s I hope to be able to add figuring out how to live in the moment before the moment is gone.
