A Higher Purpose

Purpose is a reason for being. A higher purpose is a reason for being that has a positive impact beyond oneself helping the greater world.

Everyone has a purpose in life…a unique gift or special talent to give to others.

And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.

Chopra says here that when we use our talents, particularly our unique talents, in service to others we are living our higher purpose. Talent + service = higher purpose. This is a purpose that generates a meaningful experience to others. I have often heard from folks that are living their higher purpose that their work is not work in the traditional sense but more like our traditional idea of play. Chopra calls this “timeless awareness.”

How do I find my higher purpose?

Ask yourself, “what do I love to do?” Then ask, “how can I do this for others?” When you’re able to combine those two concepts you have a purpose to pursue and try out. If it works for you and reaches others in a positive way, you’ve found it!

A common purpose

As human beings we have some aspects of our higher purpose in common:

  • To live life from an impulse of love; to be motivated by love in all we do
  • To respect each other and practice compassion and grace with each other when we falter
  • To remember that we are all inseparable participants in this beautiful universe and that we do affects us all

A call to action

Instead of doing what makes money, what we were told we should do by others, or the first thing we could find, we should stop and ask ourselves:

  1. What would I be doing if money were no object?
  2. How can I be of service to others?
  3. How can I positively impact the world with my talents and abilities?

I challenge you to examine your life and your possibilities and be willing to make a change if you are not already following your heart’s desire.
